Webinar 5: Beyond the Binary: Expanding Gender Identity
Facilitated By: Dr. Carol Clark, Ph.D., LMHC, CAP, CST
Date: Friday, February 1, 2019
Time: 8:00am- 12:00pm PST

Gender identity is more than biology and is expanding beyond simply male and female. As people worldwide have access to media and internet information and groups, they are able to explore their own gender non-conforming roles and sense of self. Therapists need to be informed and aware of the new terms with which people identify in order to offer positive acceptance and a safe haven for all of their clients. This workshop will explain the basics of Gender Dysphoria and describe the variety of gender expression and diversity. Gender Dysphoria is often accompanied by the trauma of not fitting in, being bullied or harassed, and the pain of hiding one’s self. This shame, secrecy, and trauma may lead trans people into addiction or the gender expressive behavior may become addictive.

Objectives:

  1. Differentiate between Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Biological Sex, and Sexual Orientation.
  2. Define the various terms related to Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming.
  3. Distinguish Gender Dysphoria from Transvestic Disorder and recognize when they become addictive.
