Webinar 6: Integrating Spirituality in the Sex Addiction Treatment Process
Facilitated By: Craig S. Cashwell, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, CSAT-S
Date: Friday, February 8, 2019
Time: 8:00am- 12:00pm PST

For many clients, religion and/or spirituality are critical aspects of their culture and developmental narrative. The culturally competent therapist, then, is able to integrate this aspect of client culture and development into the therapeutic process in a competent and ethical manner, regardless of setting or presenting issue. Therapists have their own experiences of religion and spirituality, however, that informs how they think and react to religious and spiritual material in the therapeutic process. The purpose of this webinar is to support therapists in understanding how cultural sensitivity to religious and spiritual issues in the client narrative can enhance treatment efficacy, and how to work with client beliefs, practices, and experiences in ways that maximize client benefit and remain true to our ethical and legal principles and standards as therapists.

Objectives:

  1. Assess client spirituality and its salience to the presenting issue

  2. Describe the salience of spirituality as a cultural and developmental phenomenon with psychological implications (i.e., that help, hinder, or transform presenting issues)

  3. Identify key cognitive distortions that hinder spiritual growth

  4. Identify the existence of spiritual bypass and helpful/hindering clinical responses to bypass

  5. Describe a variety of psycho-spiritual interventions for use in session and at home to support client recovery
