Webinar 7: Paraphilic Arousal Templates & Sex Addiction:
Calling for the Collaborative Efforts of Specialists from the Sex Addiction, Sex Offending, Sex Therapy & Trauma Disciplines
Facilitated By: Monica Meyer, Ph.D., CSAT-S
Date: Friday, March 1, 2019
Time: 8:00am- 12:00pm PST

This webinar will provide a comprehensive review of the arousal template construct and present multiple examples of how to use the Carnes 30 Task Model materials to guide clients through exploration of their arousal templates. We will also review the recent changes to the Paraphilic Disorders section of the DSM 5 and discuss specific techniques for examining paraphilic arousal templates in clients presenting with sexual addiction. Nine case studies will be reviewed in depth to illustrate conceptualization and treatment of various paraphilic arousal templates. We will review several specific examples of sadomasochistic arousal templates with roots in severe, unresolved childhood trauma. Distinctions will be made between the healthy BDSM practitioner and the sex addict engaging in emotionally destructive sadomasochistic behaviors. Recent research describing MMPI-2 correlates of sadomasochistic sex addicts will be presented. This webinar is appropriate for Advanced Level training and will be heavily clinically focused, with specific tools for practice and opportunities for interactive group participation.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the implications of relational and somatic trauma-repetition patterns for the treatment of clients who self-identify as sex addicts presenting with distressing or harmful paraphilic arousal templates and identify appropriate interventions from the 30 Task Model resources (Facing the Shadow & The Recovery Start Kit) to explore client arousal templates in therapy.

  2. Explain recent changes to the Paraphilic Disorders section of the DSM 5 and explore diagnostic considerations for sex addicts with paraphilic interests, emphasizing differential diagnosis between Sexual Addiction and Paraphilic Disorders.

  3. Apply an interdisciplinary model of treatment planning in small breakout groups utilizing case descriptions of clients Paraphilic Disorders with an emphasis on collaboration with experts, understanding a CSAT’s scope of practice and developing well-defined treatment goals.
