Webinar 9: Duplicity in the Name of God: When Church Systems Unintentionally
Throw the Sheep Under the Bus While Trying to Save Them and How the CSAT Community Can Help
Facilitated By: Adrian Hickmon, Ph.D.
Date: Friday, April 5, 2019
Time: 8:00am- 12:00pm PST

Churches and similar organizations are built on mission statements about building character and integrity. Unfortunately, when one of the flock struggles with addiction, is the victim of sexual abuse, marital infidelity, or other trauma these systems often follow a different set of rules that contradict the mission statement. The organization’s good-intentioned responses often sacrifice the needs of the sheep for their public persona or for a quick-fix that avoids the true nature of the issue, thus throwing the sheep under the bus. CSAT’s and the IITAP community are in a strategic position to help churches to effectively triage these situations.

This presentation explores ways CSAT’s can help systems effectively triage situations of addiction, infidelity and trauma by connecting to the CSAT community. The focus is on CSATs unique position to effectively deal with sexual addiction, but also chemical addiction, infidelity and trauma, because of our training in the IITAP treatment methodologies.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will discuss the duplicity phenomenon of church-type systems that result in hurting people but with good intention.

  2. Participants will explain the different levels of triage needed for church-system leaders.

  3. Participants will design strategies to connect with church-systems in order to develop effective triage functions including bringing CSATs to the church or bringing pastors to PSAP.

  4. Participants discuss the landscape of pornography, sexual addictions, and sexual trauma to church leadership and connect practical ways that the CSAT community can help parishioners.
