Webinar 11: Chemsex, Sex Addiction and Men Who Have Sex with Men: Effective Clinical Strategies for Support and Recovery
Facilitated By: David Fawcett, Ph.D., LCSW
Date: Friday, May 10, 2019
Time: 8:00am- 12:00pm PST

Chemsex, the use of methamphetamine, GHB and other drugs to enhance sex, is a growing problem, particularly among gay, bisexual, transgender, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). It is one of the most significant factors affecting new HIV infections and poor antiretroviral medication adherence. When used to enhance sexual behavior, these drugs create a lasting fusion between the intoxicated state and sexual desire, frequently resulting in sexual dysfunction. Stimulants increase both sexual desire and decrease inhibition which, in many cases, leads to a co-occurring sex addiction that must be concurrently treated. This workshop will illuminate the biological, cultural, and psychological basis for the impact of chemsex, and provide interventions and approaches that support the client in recovery from co-occurring drug and sex addiction

Objectives:

  1. Define clinical signs and symptoms related to stimulant misuse and co-occurring sex addiction.

  2. List the effects of stimulants on the brain and ways in which these drugs impact sexual arousal and behavior while mitigating distressing feelings.

  3. Identify clinical approaches for stimulant misuse and co-occurring sex addiction.
