Utilizing the Karpman Triangle to Break Unhealthy Patterns in Individual and Couples Counseling
Facilitated By: Dr. Kevin Skinner
In all of our relationships we establish patterns of interaction. It is these patterns that ultimately determine how our relationships turn out. Using as a foundation Dr. Stephen Karpman’s “A Game Free Life,” this training will introduce participants to the Drama and Compassion triangles. Participants will first learn about the triangles and then they will be given opportunities to practice using the triangles with each other. The Drama Triangle will highlight the games people play. The Compassion Triangle will help illustrate how to intentionally stop playing the game.
Explain the role of the Drama Triangle in understanding attachment relationships.
Identify the role of Drama Triangle in relationships.
Describe how the Drama Triangle influences relationships throughout the lifespan.
Describe how each role (victim, perpetrator, and rescuer) is used in the game.
Explain how identifying the three parts of the Drama Triangle will help identify important beliefs about self and others.
Identify the key steps to implementing a Drama Triangle role play with clients.
Identify with clients how the internal Drama Triangle began and how to get out of it.
Apply the Compassion Triangle on self and in relationships.
Apply the “5 Decisions We Make” when removing ourselves from the Drama Triangle.
Apply the “3 Rules of Openness for Healthy and Trustful Relationships” with clients.
Use an attachment model to help couples remove themselves from the Drama Triangle.
Demonstrate how to do the interactive Drama Triangle with a couple.
Demonstrate how to apply the Compassion Triangle with a couple.
Demonstrate how to shift core beliefs using the Compassion Triangle.
Explain how to effectively follow-up with couples after an interactive role play of the Drama Triangle.
