This webinar explores erotic transference and countertransference and considers the therapist’s personal and professional response to its manifestation. The aim is to widen knowledge of erotic material in therapy. We will consider why there is a paucity of exploration on erotic transference and countertransference, which occurs through a normalisation of its presence in clinical practice. We will look at what it may mean when we encounter or experience love, erotic and/or sexual feelings in the therapy room.

Methods of identifying erotic transference to support client needs, reduce any shame they (or the therapist) may feel, whilst holding strong therapeutic boundaries, will be discussed. Attendees will be encouraged to think back to past cases and share their own experience with the group, which will provide a framework to consider the erotic material developmentally and define its function for therapist and client.

Attention will be paid to our ability to stay present with clients, to explore the meaning behind the material in terms of relationship needs. This will provide an opportunity to enable us to talk freely about our thoughts, feelings, somatic experiences and behaviour when faced with erotic transference and countertransference so that we can work with an increased awareness.

Objectives:
  • Develop a deeper knowledge of erotic transference and counter transference and the myriad of thoughts and feeling it may evoke.
  • Provide a safe space to discuss intimate details from clinical practice, working with good boundaries in a non-shaming approach.
  • Consider case example within a safe group setting, and identify erotic countertransference and work relationally with the client.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise and name different erotic feelings
  • Normalise the presence in your practice
  • Identify ways to capture the meaning behind the erotic material.
  • Develop ways to self-supervise and speak to other colleagues and supervisor.
