Course Description
Assessing and Treating Partners and the Family System Following Betrayal

The second and final module of the CPTT training focuses on learning how to conduct a thorough assessment of betrayal trauma including the use of cutting edge assessment tools for betrayal trauma and complex trauma, such as the IPAST and the PTSI-R, in addition to understanding key intervention methods in couples therapy. Participants will also learn specific treatment strategies for partners from different ethnic and sexual minority backgrounds, as well as how to work with male partners. A special focus on working with the family system is also included, including strategies for healing betrayal in couples therapy and working with children.

Dr. Kevin Skinner CSAT-S, CPTT, LMFT is the co-founder and Clinical Director of Addo Recovery in Lindon, Utah. He’s a licensed marriage and family therapist who has been helping individuals and families for over 20 years. He is the author of “Treating Pornography Addiction,” and he has created multiple audio series regarding pornography addiction and relationship intimacy.

Dr. Skinner is the co-author of the Trauma Inventory for Partner’s of Sexual Addicts (TIPSA) that is a part of the IPAST. Shirley Lytle MDiv, LMHC, CSAT, Gottman, CPTT is an author, ordained minister, licensed counselor and a relationship expert. She is a 3rd generation pastor. Rev. Lytle has worked in ministry for over 35 years and 10 years in the counseling field. Rev. Lytle graduated from Phoenix Seminary with a Master of Divinity with a concentration in counseling and family. She holds an undergraduate degree in Business Management. She completed a post-master’s certification in Clinical Pastoral Counseling through Seattle University.

Adam Nisenson, LMFT, CSAT is a therapist, author, speaker, and host of the Men Get Cheated On Too Podcast. At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Integrate the IPAST assessment to identify client’s needs quickly and efficiently.
  2. Identify the five common symptoms associated with Betrayal Trauma.
  3. Implement treatment solutions for each of the 5 core PTSD symptoms.
  4. Identify additional mental health issues clients experience after discovering sexual betrayal.
  5. Assess how the role of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in a client’s life influences their experiences in relationships.
  6. Develop an effective treatment plan with betrayed partners.
  7. Implement a treatment model for treating different phases of betrayal trauma healing.
  8. Identify complex trauma and incorporate best practices model with highly traumatized clients.
  9. Help clients identify shame and strategize ways to combat it as they approach healing.
  10. Assist clients in developing more self-compassion in the healing process.
  11. Define how gas lighting and sexual secrets impact the partner traumatically.

  23. Demonstrate strategies to increase addict empathy for the partner’s betrayal trauma.
  24. Identify key aspects of how to support other family members who have been impacted by sexually compulsive behavior (e.g., children, parents).
  25. Integrate assessments into clinical work with couples with sexually compulsive behavior as a strategy for increasing the addict’s awareness and empathy around partner betrayal trauma and providing validation for the partner.
  26. Identify five clinical intervention strategies for managing escalated couples.
  27. Apply clinical exercises to support couples in creating a sexual health plan and addressing common issues that can occur during sexual reintegration.
  28. Design a plan for addressing relapses in clinical couple’s work, and identify five goals and guidelines for therapeutic separation and when this intervention may be appropriate for couple’s recovery plan.
  29. Describe the impact of the sexually addicted family system on the adult child.
  30. Identify the characteristics of the adult child from a sexually addicted family system.
  31. Define the roles of the adult child from a sexually addicted family system.

Policy and Resources

In order to earn full CE Credit for attending a CSAT, CPTT, CCBRT, RAE, RACS, or PSAP module training, or CMAT training, full attendance is mandatory. If any hours over the course of the training are missed, those hours must be made up by attending the next available offering of the module at a cost of $250 per half day

  • Refund: For a full refund, a written cancellation notice must be received by IITAP no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event. Adam is the author of A Man’s Guide to Partner Betrayal, the first book of its kind written by a man for men. He also wrote the companion clinical workbook A Man’s Guide to Trust After Partner Betrayal and the guided journal No Man’s Land, offering a complete roadmap for healing.

His work combines trauma-informed therapy, depth psychology, and masculine-focused recovery. Adam holds a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacifica Graduate Institute.

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

  2. Identify the five common symptoms associated with Betrayal Trauma.

  24. Identify key aspects of how to support other family members who have been impacted by sexually compulsive behavior (e.g., children, parents).
  25. Integrate assessments into clinical work with couples with sexually compulsive behavior as a strategy for increasing the addict’s awareness and empathy around partner betrayal trauma and providing validation for the partner.
  26. Identify five clinical intervention strategies for managing escalated couples.
  27. Apply clinical exercises to support couples in creating a sexual health plan and addressing common issues that can occur during sexual reintegration.
  28. Design a plan for addressing relapses in clinical couple’s work, and identify five goals and guidelines for therapeutic separation and when this intervention may be appropriate for couple’s recovery plan.
  29. Describe the impact of the sexually addicted family system on the adult child.
  30. Identify the characteristics of the adult child from a sexually addicted family system.
  31. Define the roles of the adult child from a sexually addicted family system.

Policy and Resources

In order to earn full CE Credit for attending a CSAT, CPTT, CCBRT, RAE, RACS, or PSAP module training, or CMAT training, full attendance is mandatory. If any hours over the course of the training are missed, those hours must be made up by attending the next available offering of the module at a cost of $250 per half day

  • Refund: For a full refund, a written cancellation notice must be received by IITAP no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event. Cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event will be refunded less a $300 cancellation fee. Allow 6 weeks for refund.
  • Credit: To receive a credit for the full registration fee, a written cancellation notice must be received by IITAP no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event. Cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event will be credited less a $300 cancellation fee. Credits expire 1 year from the date issued.
  • Transfer: Registration fees may be transferred to another module training or workshop, if available. Transfer requests must be submitted in writing to IITAP prior to the first day of the scheduled event, and the training must be completed within 1 year of the original event. If the training is not completed within that timeframe, the registration fee will be forfeited, and it will be the participant’s responsibility to register for the next available training and pay the full registration fee.
