In Module 1, participants will be introduced to the historical and philosophical underpinnings of a couple–centered approach to the treatment of betrayal trauma, as well as learn basic and intermediate interventions for immediate use with
couples in this population. Participants will learn and utilize the framework of Couple–Centered Recovery.

Cultural dynamics and considerations will be explored to help participants learn how to integrate culturally responsive practices in couples counseling including how to engage culture in clinical settings and strategies that are helpful
for diverse couples (e.g., ethnic, spiritual, racial, financial, and family structures). An in-depth focus on LGBTQ couples will be presented during module 4 training.

Upon completion of module 1, participants will have the necessary tools that improve their ability to identify the cultural dynamics influencing the healing process of betrayal trauma. Participants will also be provided with an overview
of the Couple’s Roadmap to Recovery, describing the seven stages of couples healing and tasks for the addict, partner, and couple at each stage. Common behavior patterns of the addict, partner and couple will be defined during this
module training. Definitions of various roles of the couple’s therapist include psychoeducation, evaluation, referral, time limited support, and intensive couples therapy. This course will also provide an explanation of the three integral
and interrelated parallel tracks that couple therapists must be aware of in their approach with couples.
