Look Up a Therapist’s License – A State-by-State Guide

  1. Go to: Open Counseling
  2. Navigate to your state
  3. There are several types of license a therapist may hold. If you don’t know their specific license type, you may need to follow multiple “License Search” links.
  1. IITAP Certified Professionals are required to have a working knowledge of the Legal and Ethical Standards.
  2. Dual relationships that might impair the IITAP Certified Professional’s objectivity and judgment must be avoided, i.e., family members, friends, etc.
  3. IITAP Certified Professionals will not engage in sexual, physical, or romantic intimacy with clients and/or associated individuals.
  4. IITAP Certified Professionals do not engage in reparative therapy and do not pathologize or regard any sexual orientation as a mental illness. IITAP has a “zero tolerance” policy on this practice and reserves the right to revoke certification at will if evidence proves a violation has occurred.
  5. I am aware that a false statement or evasive answer to any questions on my training application or renewal submission may lead to denial of my application or subsequent revocation of my certification on ethical grounds.
  6. By signing this Legal and Ethical Policy Statement and/or Training Application, I understand if my professional state license, country/college registration, or approval to practice in any state, province or country is expired, suspended, or revoked, IITAP reserves the right to suspend and/or revoke my certification permanently.
  7. I understand that as an IITAP Certified Professional I am authorized/licensed to use only the credential/certification designation I have been authorized in writing by IITAP to use in association with the counseling and therapy services I provide.
  8. I understand that ASAT, CSAT, CSAT-S, APTT, CPTT, CPTT-S, ACBRT, CCBRT, TCAS, PSAP, PSAP-S, RACS, AMAT and CMAT are designations that a member has completed specialty training in the assessment and treatment of addiction and/or trauma and that the member is in good standing with IITAP. These designations do not qualify a person for a state licensure, country/college registration or the authority to practice outside of their scope of training, certification, or licensure.
  9. The use of the designations accredited by IITAP is under license from IITAP. The right to the continued use of such designations is subject to compliance with this policy statement and the requirements set out herein.
  10. IITAP Certified Clinical Professionals are required to be licensed, registered, or approved to provide therapy services in their state, region, and/or country, and are responsible for understanding and abiding by the current legal and ethical requirements that govern their practice in the location in which they are providing services.
  11. IITAP members are required and responsible to maintain accurate and current profile and contact information on https://iitap.com.
  12. IITAP reserves the right to modify the terms of the Legal and Ethical Policy Manual (inclusive of Legal and Ethical Policy Statement) at any time and will provide notice to the members using the email on the members IITAP profile.

I have read the IITAP Legal and Ethical Policy Manual. I will abide by the requirements of IITAP, and its Certification Programs as related to applicant certification and accepted principles of professionalism, ethics, policy, and practice standards.

I understand that IITAP reserves the right at their discretion, to re-classify persons who have taken the courses for certification if laws, ethical regulations, policies, or standards for the behavioral health industry changes or requires additional education or licensure.
