What Heals, What Hurts, and How to Offer Hope in the Wake of Sexual Betrayal

When sexual betrayal is revealed in a relationship—pornography use, cybersex, or compulsive sexual behavior—everything changes in an instant. For the betrayed partner, it’s not simply relational disappointment; it’s often experienced as shock, emotional collapse, and trauma.

And in that moment, helping professionals are usually the first to respond.

Clergy, coaches, and clinicians step into crisis conversations with the best of intentions—but often with little clarity about what actually helps. We reach for words, prayer, reassurance, and problem-solving. Yet without a trauma-informed framework, even compassionate responses can unintentionally deepen shame, amplify confusion, or silence the very person trying to survive the rupture.

My research with 14,000 sexually betrayed partners reveals a stark reality: these experiences are frequently traumatic. In a sample of 100 partners, 76% met clinical thresholds for posttraumatic stress symptoms. The effects of chronic sexual deception often resemble frontline trauma exposure—producing shock, hypervigilance, intrusive anxiety, anger, sleep disruption, and depression. While many appear to be “high functioning” or “spiritually strong” privately they are unraveling with carried shame, isolation and disenfranchised grief.

This keynote brings forward the lived experiences of betrayed partners to answer a critical question: What actually helps—and what causes further harm—in the moments that matter most?

Participants will learn how to respond in ways that reduce harm, stabilize emotional and spiritual injury, and open pathways toward safety, truth, and relational healing.

Bio

Dr. Sheri Denham, MFT, CPTT-S, CSAT, CCPS, CCBRT CCES received her PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy and her Master of Arts Theology, both from Fuller Theological Seminary. She currently specializes in individual, couples and family therapy at her private practice in Newport Beach, CA. With nearly 25 years experience as a marriage and family therapist, Dr. Sheri believes in looking at issues from a psychological, biological and spiritual perspective. She commonly uses brain based assessments and treatments such as EMDR, (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as she works with those dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, stress, and general life transitions.

As a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist Supervisor (CPTT-S), Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), Certified Clinical Partner Specialist (CCPS), Certified Couples Betrayal Recovery Therapist (CCBRT-candidate) Certified Clinical ERCEM Specialist (CCES), and a Consultant in EMDR, she brings new tools and a fresh look at what’s needed not only to heal but heal well.

Dr. Sheri’s a keynote speaker and recipient of 2019 IITAP Outstanding Publication Award for her book Intimate Deception: Healing the Wounds of Sexual Betrayal. Becoming a Healing Church

Children, teens, men, and women, and even church staff are being impacted by pornography, but the topic is often too taboo for the local church. This deafening silence is harming the local congregation. Christian and secular studies show pornography reduces church attendance, individual faith, feelings of closeness to God, scripture and prayer life, and volunteerism in the local church. However, churches addressing issues like pornography well reverse all of these factors in people's lives. With God, every challenge comes with an opportunity. Every Goliath meets not David, but the Spirit within him. Pornography isn’t a giant to shrink from or shake our heads about; it’s a juncture to show how God’s power turns the miserable into mentors. God rescues people, even Christians, and helps them turn their maladies into ministry. And when the local church sets its heart on this work, that church becomes stronger, producing servants who give greater care to others and make their pastors’ workloads easier.

Sam Black is the author of The Healing Church: What Churches Get Wrong About Pornography and How to Fix It. The Director of Recovery Education at Covenant Eyes, Sam joined the Covenant Eyes team in 2007 after 18 years as an award-winning journalist. He has edited 16 books on the impact of pornography and speaks at parent, men’s, and leaders events. Sam has been a guest on hundreds of podcasts and TV and radio shows. Sam also wrote The Porn Circuit: Understand Your Brain and Break Porn Habits.

He is a recovery coach, certified by Christian Sex Addiction Specialists International. Sam is passionate about helping people of faith live free from pornography because he knows you keep what you give away. He walks his own grace-filled journey with the support of valued allies.

Casey Allison is a Certified Partner Coach, Pastoral Sex Addiction Professional Candidate, and founder of Come Awake Coaching and Consulting. She spent 10 years as a missionary before building her new career in the field of problematic sexual behavior with additional training in supporting families and partners of sexual offenders. She resides in Alabama where she enjoys homeschooling her 9 children, writing, and being part of a wonderful faith community.

The PSAP's Unique Role in Supporting Families

With the growing number of providers and resources for partners of sex addicts, professionals in the field of sexual addiction have also begun to realize the need for and create resources for children affected by the betrayal trauma and problematic sexual behavior (PSB) of their parents. Being a mother of nine with children ranging from ages 3 to 18, I have used every step of my healing after betrayal, my professional training, and the minimal resources available to me to take into consideration and implement how I could best support each of my children. After completing the Betrayed Families training through APSATS and with input from my older children, I created a children's book and curriculum for families that has been endorsed by Dr. Piper Grant and is meant to be used after a family disclosure using her family disclosure course.

Drawing from my Betrayed Families training, I will provide participants with the basic information they can share with parents on their children’s potential needs and what resources and referrals will most benefit their children. I will also share specifically how a PSAP can be a safe place to listen to the struggles and pain that will inevitably arise as parents work toward building deeper connections with their children and making repairs in those relationships. Regardless of their specific faith community, this program will allow PSAPs to create a plan to support the needs of parents who are trying to mitigate the impact of betrayal trauma and PSB on their children.

Deborah Flanagan

Deborah Flanagan, PSAP-S

Deborah is a Supervisor through the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). She is also a certified Transformational Coach through Western Seminary. Deborah is currently a clinician working for Pure Desire Ministries, International. She has more than 30 years of experience helping women with sexual addiction and relational trauma, and more recently helping couples restore their marriage from betrayal trauma. Incorporated in restoration planning, Deborah passionately helps men and women discover their true identity in our Lord and the joy they experience when they find lifelong healing from shame. She and her husband, Harry, also a clinician at Pure Desire, live in Gresham, Oregon with their adopted male orange tabby, Loki.

The Power of Story

In this presentation, participants will gain skill in helping men and women with uncovering, contextualizing and restoring their sense of value and worthiness. We will discuss the formation of false beliefs and the resulting style of relating that we use to escape shame. Participants will learn how stories of harm affects us and how to guide others in understanding God's redemptive power in healing us.

Matthew Gallo

Chaplian, Major Matthew Gallo, PSAP

Chaplain, Major Matthew Gallo is the Deputy Delta Chaplain at Space Base Delta 1, Peterson Space Force Base, Colo. In this capacity he assists the Delta Chaplain in providing guidance to commanders regarding spiritual, morale, and ethical matters related to personnel assigned to Space Base Delta 1. In addition, Ch Gallo oversees programs fostering spiritual resiliency and care for the Peterson Chaplain Corps Branch. Chaplain Gallo is an advisor to the USSF leadership concerning the First Amendment Constitutional right to the free exercise of religion and cases concerning religious accommodation. He is also charged with assisting in the oversight and management of all religious activities on the base, including worship services and religious education. Chaplain Gallo is a native of Ramey, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the Air Force as an Aerial Porter in June, 2001. His enlisted career has taken him to the flight lines of Elmendorf Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska, and McGuire AFB, New Jersey. He has also been deployed five times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. Following his assignment to McGuire AFB, Chaplain Gallo transferred to the Air Force Reserve as a Chaplain Candidate in 2010. In 2012 he received his commission as a chaplain. He had served as both a hospital and hospice chaplain for four years prior to entering active duty as a chaplain in 2014. The Christian and Missionary Alliance has been Chaplain Gallo’s endorsing body since 2010. He is married to his best friend, Erica and they have 2 daughters together.


Problematic Sexual Behavior in the Military

I was blessed to bring the first sexual addiction awareness program ever into the Department of Defense that was accepted and embraced throughout the entire Air Force. Through 8 years of research, presentations, and education that I've given in the military setting I will show how it has been helpful and not been helpful with military readiness, unit cohesion, and good order and discipline. There have been many advances in the area of Sexual Addiction over the last 40+ years. However, there is one culture that has yet to receive such care, and that is the US Military. I was blessed to pioneer this topic into the unchartered waters of our county's military further than anyone else has been allowed to go. In this presentation I will share where it all started, to where we stand today, and all the struggles that came about during these last 8 years of introducing problematic sexual addiction into the US military.

Dan Hunt, Ph.D., is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. He is founder of Arkansas Family Therapy & Consulting, a private practice located in Little Rock, Arkansas. In the Mind of the Betrayer and the Betrayed: A Compassionate Guide to Navigating Couple’s Recovery in Church Communities

This presentation will focus on helping PSAPs and church leadership at the point of interaction with the recovering couple during Task 1 (Couple’s Crisis Management) of the 7 Task Model of Couple Recovery. Attendees will gain specific tools that are built around compassion and empathy to help manage betrayer and betrayed fears within the church context. Case study will be utilized to help attendees be able to name the unique experiences of both members of the dyad. With the 7 Task Model of Couple Recovery, the field of sex addiction and betrayal trauma recovery continues to grow toward couple recovery, making this presentation relevant for church leadership. Through case study and practical conversational strategies, attendees will learn how to offer empathy and support to enhance chances of relationship success. This session offers actionable insights for church leadership to interact more sensitively and effectively with affected couples.

Nick Stumbo

Nick Stumbo, PSAP

Nick has been the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries since 2016. He is the author of two books; Setting Us Free, his personal story of healing and redemptions, and Safe: Creating a Culture of Grace in a Climate of Shame. Nick began his own healing journey in 2010, and has been working with men and women in the area of sexual health and purity since that time. Nick has led dozens of Pure Desire groups for men, both through the local church and online. He is passionately committed to the local church and to helping the church become a place of authenticity, healing, and wholeness. Prior to working at Pure Desire, Nick pastored a church in Kelso, WA for 15 years. He received his Masters of Divinity from Bethel University St. Paul, and is a certified Pastoral Sex Addiction Professional. He is an eight-time marathoner, a committed Minnesota Twins fan, and always up for trying a new microbrew.

Overcoming the Power of Trauma's Message Through Lived Experience in Recovery

In the recovery process, most clients and group members become aware of their trauma stories and how these have contributed to negative, addictive behaviors. The associated core beliefs can keep a person trapped in this vicious cycle for many, many years. While most recovery programs help with the understanding of trauma, not all programs provide a clear methodology of recovery and change around our trauma. While much work can be and should be done in a therapeutic relationship, PSAPs and group leaders can play an instrumental role in helping someone change the narrative of their trauma. This session will equip PSAPs, coaches, and group leaders with practical tools to aid someone in the process of transforming their trauma messages into positive core beliefs rooted in their faith in Christ.

Learning Objectives

  1. Help someone identify and appropriately describe their worst moments and significant trauma.
  2. Articulate a pathway for those in recovery between the trauma message and new, faith-filled core beliefs.
  3. Implement strategies to continue building on these new core beliefs throughout the recovery journey.

Seasoned leader and coach with 38 years of experience training and developing
people. Holds a degree in church management and certifications as a John Maxwell coach,
speaker, and trainer, as well as a marriage coach, Celebrate Recovery group leader, and PSAP certified. Currently serves as a Training Coordinator for the State of Florida, continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

The PSAP's role within the African American Congregation

African American congregations often lack care ministries, preventing congregants from receiving help in areas such as sex, drugs, and alcohol addiction. This presentation aims to inform PSAPs about the history of the African American Church and its reluctance towards care ministries or anything resembling counseling. It will also teach PSAPs the best approach to start a dialogue about care and counseling within the church, particularly with church leadership. Additionally, the presentation will address the historical obstacles that need to be overcome in order to reach men and women struggling with sex addiction in the African American Church. To effectively connect with African American congregations, PSAPs need to understand the leadership style and values shaped by history, which can create reluctance toward counseling and care ministries.

Tabitha Westbrook, LMFT-S, LCMHC-QS, LPC-S

Tabitha Westbrook, LMFT-S, LCMHC-QS, LPC-S, is a licensed therapist who
helps people who have messy, funky pasts (and sometimes messy, funky presents) live amazing, empowered lives today. Tabitha graduated with her BA in Psychology from NC Central University and her MA in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Shalom Restored: How Addressing Addiction and Abuse in the Church Leads to Flourishing

God created men and women in His image. Together, He assigned them the duty of having dominion over the earth, stewarding and caring for the good gifts He created. The picture was a beautiful partnership, filled with intoxicating intimacy without shame. Sadly, it would not last. Shalom was shattered. Sex addiction and abuse are part of the result. Statistically, women are on the receiving end of both with alarming frequency. Often a victim's first attempt to get help is through her church, yet many churches remain ill equipped to help. Churches, and Pastoral Sex Addiction Professionals (PSAPs), are uniquely positioned to render aid not only to the victim, but also to the addict/abuser. This presentation will help PSAPs understand the interplay between sex addiction and abuse, provide practical ways in which PSAPs and church leadership can come alongside both parties, and support healthy sexuality for both men and women.

Please note: The PSAP Summit provides non-clinical training in addiction and trauma recovery. CEs may only be applied to IITAP Members. No exceptions can be made.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Recording Policy for Live Workshops & Webinars

Participation in this live workshop, webinar, consultation group, or training program constitutes acknowledgment and agreement to the following terms regarding artificial intelligence tools, recording technologies, and confidential materials.

 

Prohibited Use of AI and Automated Technologies

Participants may not use any artificial intelligence (“AI”), machine learning, generative AI, automated transcription, automated note-taking, meeting bot, screen-capture, smart recording, browser-assistant, AI glasses or similar technology during the event unless expressly authorized in writing by IITAP®.

Course Description
 

The struggle with sex addiction is often accompanied by deep shame and pain. The PSAP certification program is designed for pastors and ministry leaders to help guide their  congregants through this difficult journey—offering support to diminish the grip of addiction and lead them toward healing and freedom. Over the course of this 4-day training, you will be introduced to the concept of sex addiction and treatment planning. Pastors will engage with a comprehensive curriculum covering topics such as the neuroscience of addiction, the etiology of sex addiction, distinguishing sin from addiction, supporting partners and families, understanding betrayal trauma, practicing Immanuel—being present with people in their pain—and more!

Adrian Hickmon, PhD, LPC, LMFT, LAD, CSAT- S CSAT- S, EMDR, AAMFT coached football for 14 years, 11 as a head coach in high school. From its beginning in 1993 until 2013, he served as a Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy in the Marriage and Family Master’s Program at Harding University. In 2001 he founded Capstone Treatment Center in Searcy, Arkansas, where he now serves as the CEO. Hickmon holds a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech and a MA in Substance Abuse Counseling from NE Louisiana University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Dr. Hickmon has over 25,000 hours of therapy and supervision-of-therapy experience. His specialized credentials include; CSAT - S, CTT (Certified Trauma Therapist), EMDR I, CMAT-S, and AAMFT-S. Dr. Hickmon developed the Core Model of therapy which focuses on chemical and process addictions and compulsions, trauma, attachment, relationship intimacy within the family and their core underlying issues. He has presented internationally on these topics. He and his wife JoAnna have been married for 42 years and live in their childhood hometown in Arkansas. They have two daughters 38 and 36, twin sons 28, and four grandsons 6 and under. His greatest joy is being with his family especially if they are playing in God’s great outdoors, fishing or hunting.

Jenna Riemersma LPC, CSAT-S, CMAT EMDR, IFS, NCC is the Clinical Director of the Atlanta Center for Relational Healing. She is also a teaching faculty member for the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP).

Jenna holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University, and a Masters Degree in Professional Counseling from Richmont Graduate University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), an EMDR-trained trauma therapist, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist Supervisor (CSAT-S), Certified Multiple Addiction Therapist Supervisor (CMAT-S), an Internal Family Systems therapist (IFS), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Jenna is also a trained Experiential Therapist and Psychodramatist.

Jenna is a published author and popular speaker, and her upcoming book on IFS and Spirituality is in publication.

Her previous career was in the field of public policy, where she served in various legislative capacities on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Jenna has been happily married for over 20 years, is a proud mom of two college students, an animal lover, and yoga enthusiast.

Shirley Lytle MDiv, LMHC, CSAT, Gottman, CPTT is an author, ordained minister, licensed counselor and a relationship expert. She is a 3rd generation pastor. Rev. Lytle has worked in ministry for over 35 years and 15 years in the counseling field. Rev. Lytle graduated from Phoenix Seminary with a Master of Divinity with a concentration in counseling and family. She holds an undergraduate degree in Business Management. She completed a post-master’s certification in Clinical Pastoral Counseling through Seattle University.

She is a certified relationship therapist through Gottman Institute and a Sex Addiction and Partner Trauma therapist (CSAT®, CPTT®) through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals. She is a licensed mental health counselor within the state of Washington with a private practice (Living with Purpose Counseling) in Bellevue focusing on anxiety, depression and couples counseling. Prior to transitioning to the counseling field, Shirley spent 18 years in senior management in the accounting field.

Shirley balances her time and attention between her counseling practice while supporting pastors in ministry. She develops and facilitates relationship and communication workshops for churches and corporations both nationally and internationally. In order to earn full CE Credit for attending a CSAT, CPTT, CCBRT, RAE, RACS, or PSAP module training, or CMAT training, full attendance is mandatory. If any hours over the course of the training are missed, those hours must be made up by attending the next available offering of the module at a cost of $250 per half day.

  • Refund: For a full refund, a written cancellation notice must be received by IITAP no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event. Cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the first day of the scheduled event will be refunded less a $300 cancellation fee. Refunds that cannot be processed due to incorrect or outdated payment or mailing information (e.g., invalid credit card details or an undeliverable address) will be forfeited. The refund policy also applies to bundles.  Please refer to the Bundle Policy below for specifics related to remaining funds.   Allow 6 weeks for refund.
  • Transfer: Registration fees may be transferred one time only to another PSAP Module 1 training , if available. Transfer requests must be submitted in writing to IITAP prior to the first day of the scheduled event, and the training must be completed within 1 year of the original event. If the training is not completed within that timeframe, it will be treated as a cancellation, and the participant will be refunded based on the original training and cancellation dates. It will be the participant's responsibility to register for the next available training and pay the full registration fee. The transfer policy also applies to bundles. Please refer to the Bundle Policy below for specific details. 

Module bundle pricing is available as a registration fee option for most certification trainings and may not be shared with any other Candidate or Registrant. Associated bundle credits must be used within the Candidate’s training timeframe: 2 years from their first module training. If the funds are not used by this deadline, they will be forfeited (non-refundable and non-transferable).

If the Candidate cancels their training and is seeking a refund, the following stipulations will apply:

  • If cancelling the original purchase, and no funds from the bundle have been used, the regular cancellation policy will apply. A full refund will be issued for cancellations received up to 30 days prior to the start of the training. Cancellations received less than 30 days prior will be refunded less a $300 cancellation fee.
  • If cancelling after the bundle discounted rate has been applied to one or more trainings, the associated discount amount will be voided, and the standard rate of the training(s) completed will be applied and deducted from the bundle total paid. The remaining amount will be refunded.
  • No refunds will be available as of the first day of the scheduled event.

If the Candidate cancels a training included in the bundle and is seeking a transfer, the following will apply:

  • Registration fees may be transferred one time only to another module within the same training program. Transfer requests must be submitted prior to the first day of the scheduled event. If the registrant is unable to attend the transferred module training, it will be treated as a cancellation. The Candidate’s bundle payment will be refunded, based on the stipulations above. The cancellation fee, if applicable, will be based on the original training and cancellation dates.
